(All 14/15 years old) were jailed for the aggravated robbery of a 16 year-old schoolgirl which took place in 1999.
The three girls were freed seven months later after a witness admitted she lied. They were also found to have been nowhere near the attack. Their conviction was overturned in 2001 and they received a sizeable financial compensation.
It was found the actions of the police during interviews were overbearing and deceitful. Court of Appeal judge, Justice Gault, said the girls had the court’s sympathy for the injustice that had wrongly sent them to prison.
