How One Pasifika Entrepreneur is Revolutionizing Supermarket Shelves
In a market where products from Pasifika and Maori communities often aren't as visible in big stores, Pasifika-owned business 'Drink Da Milgy' is breaking new ground. Landing a deal with Woolworths (Countdown), making them one of the first Pasifika-owned beverage companies to be sold in a major supermarket.
Founded by a visionary entrepreneur of Niuean and Tongan heritage, this Pasifika venture is reshaping the dairy industry with a mission to amplify representation and inclusion.
"At the beginning of 2023, I noticed a stark absence of Pasifika and Maori products in supermarkets," shares the founder, Saion Angi. "I realized I needed to be the one to create that change."
The journey commenced with a strategic focus on the milk market, a fiercely competitive domain. "I chose milk because it's a highly competitive space," the founder explains. "If we could succeed there, it would pave the way for other Pasifika and Maori products."
Now in 2024, the entrepreneur has landed a deal that will see Drink Da Milgy being stocked in 22 stores across the Country.
The journey of Drink Da Milgy is not without its challenges, but it is through these challenges that Angi and his team have found their strength. "Entrepreneurship is not glamorous," he admits. "But my ultimate goal is to have an aisle dedicated to Pasifika and Maori products in supermarkets."
Despite facing setbacks, including the departure of initial business partners, Angi remains undeterred in his mission. "My business partners exited the company earlier this year," he reveals. "But they are now pursuing their own paths, which I deeply respect."
With a heritage rooted in Niuean and Tongan culture, Angi draws inspiration from his upbringing and ancestry. "I am half Niuean and half Tongan," he proudly states. "And I am committed to honoring my cultural legacy through Drink Da Milgy."
Looking ahead, Angi envisions a future where Pasifika and Maori businesses thrive in the mainstream market. "My advice to other Maori and Pasifika business owners is to engage in self-reflection," he shares. "Develop your why and your reason for everything you do."
Angi's motivation extends beyond business success; for him, it’s deeply personal and rooted in his family's sacrifices. "What keeps me going now is the goal of 'retiring my family,' starting with my grandparents. They came to New Zealand seeking a better life, and I am committed to honoring their sacrifice by creating that better life for my family. I strive to break the generational curse through business.”
As Drink Da Milgy continues to make waves in the business world, it serves as a shining example of Pasifika excellence and resilience. With each milestone achieved, it brings the dream of a dedicated aisle for Pasifika and Maori products one step closer to reality.
