Kava, Koko & Krack ups at the local Makeki!
Hot Kalo, ripe mangoes, and a dizzying array of island fashions make up all the colours of the rainbow at the big breezy produce makeki in Fugalei.
It's the centre point of local trade that does the thing every community market is supposed to do- hum with the sounds smells and visuals of local life, and offer up things you may never find anywhere else in the world.
The newly built makeki doesn't seem to be on the radar of many Aussie and Kiwi Samoans- whether that's a matter of just finding it, or demystifying what's in there that may look too freaky to try.
A treasure trove of every fruit and veg on the island, the makeki has also become the go to for hot umu at lunchtime to be eaten with fresh sea or steaming cups of koko esi.
Then there's the myriad array of handicrafts- the ie togas, the Siapo the carved woodwork in amongst the fans bags and ulas. These are often treasured finds for Polys overseas who can't source these natural fibre measina back home.
There are more funky fashions then ever before from local designers whose creations are hand printed explosions of colour.
In amongst the food delicacies and hand crafted gifts are the everyday island staples: the salus, the fans and the pulu- natures best exfoliant.
Next time you're in the motherland stop off and explore the makeki in all its chaotic glory and take time to hang with these guys throwin it down in a fast and furious display of skills and wit at the checkers and kava club down the back.
