Pele Makes History as the First Pacific Business in Westfield Manukau
In a retail landscape where Pasifika and Māori businesses often face challenges breaking into mainstream spaces, Pele is carving out its own path.
Founded by a proud NZ-born Polynesian with Samoan (Leulumoega Tuai), Tongan, and a touch of Irish heritage, this Pasifika-owned brand is bringing Pacific Baby Gears to Westfield Manukau Monday 25 November!
"I always felt I was destined to do something amazing!" shares Noeleen Tuala (Founder & CEO of Pele)
"I went looking for a Pacific-designed blanket when my 3rd grandchild was born, and after finding one, I was disappointed in the quality. That was the defining moment when I knew this is what I was meant to be doing."
The journey of entrepreneurship, as Tuala describes, is far from glamorous. "It is hard work! Others see the front face of it all, but behind the scenes, it is emotionally draining because when you are the CEO, packer, and everything else, it can take a huge toll on your mental health,"
"Especially if you are like me, who has worked full-time and run Pele since launch while also being a present wife, nana, and mum. My inspiration comes from our people who came before us and those who will come after us—the fact I know not everyone gets to do what they love, so I never take it for granted."
"I am someone who feels strongly that Pele is God's plan for me, and for that reason, once I was approached—I was all in!"
"Being the first Pacific business in Westfield Manukau is so surreal to me, and the driving factor will always be my people and the hopes I can inspire others to follow suit. I am so grateful for the opportunity. My Brown business owners—be authentically you, and you will go far!"
When asked about advice for other Māori and Pasifika entrepreneurs, Tuala passionately urges them to dream big: "Keep reaching for the top of the tallest coconut tree! Don't settle! Please don't settle. We as Pacific people have defied so much hardship, especially those who came before us, so we need to stand tall in all we are and be authentically us! Take that leap of faith because you have a ready-made community ready to back you!"
