"Dune" could cement Jason Momoa's ultimate reign in Hollywood
The trailer for "Dune" had movie buffs talking from the moment it was realeased and the anticipation for the epic movie has been rapidly growing with its recent run at the Venice Film Festival.
Denis Villenueve’s science fiction epic is based on the classic novel by Frank Herbert. Dune is described as a sprawling story of power, betrayal and exploitation set in the distant future. The movie has been receiving rave reviews from those who have watched. "Dune reminds us what a Hollywood blockbuster can be," wrote movie critic Xan Brooks, while offering five stars.
Jason Momoa is no stranger to huge action roles from Khal Drogo to Aquaman, but the shinning reviews from Dune might just be the cherry on top of the cake for his soaring career. If the film manages to reach viewers and gain fans like critics anticipate this might be the beginning of a growing fandom.
The Hawaiian actor plays the character Duncan Idaho. In Herbert’s novel, Duncan is described as a handsome man with "curling black hair" to whom women are easily attracted. Duncan is fiercely loyal to House Atreides, a skilled pilot, and as a Swordmaster of the Ginaz is a gifted hand-to-hand fighter.
Being a vital character in the story director Villenueve handpicked his Duncan Idaho, calling up Jason Momoa and personally offering him the role. The story of Dune has been adapted previously on film (1984) and twice on tv (2000 & 2003), but Jason Momoa will be the first person of colour to take on the role of Idaho.
He acts alongside Hollywood rising and classic stars such as Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Dave Bautista, Oscar Isaac and Josh Brolin among many others. The film has been coined to be THE epic movie of this generation, securing all who are involved a memorable spot in Hollywood.
Jason Momoa has been doing press for the highly anticipated movie and has reinforced his gratitude to be on the project. The Hawaiian actor is so invested in the public experience of the movie that he did his recent Dune press tour over Zoom while fighting a cold.
