From Screen to Stage: Auckland Theatre Company Presents "Red, White and Brass: The Play"
Auckland Theatre Company is set to ignite Rugby World Cup fever once again in Auckland, this time with a vibrant stage adaptation of the beloved Aotearoa film "Red, White and Brass."
From June 18 - July 6, the ASB Waterfront Theatre will come alive with the energetic tale, led by a group of Tongan superfans, promising audiences an unforgettable experience.
Set in 2011 in Wellington, the now familiar story revolves around Maka (JP Foliaki), a passionate Tongan rugby fan determined to secure tickets for the monumental Tonga versus France Rugby World Cup game.
When faced with the disappointment of missing out on tickets, Maka and his friends come up with a daring plan—to form a Tongan marching brass band for the pre-match entertainment.
But here's the twist: they know nothing about marching, nor do they possess any instruments. Can this band of misfits pull off the performance of a lifetime?
What unfolds is an inspiring journey of self-discovery, as Maka and his friends learn valuable lessons about the importance of their Tongan heritage, community, and the courage to stand up for what they believe in.
Inspired by a true story, "Red, White and Brass: The Play" promises to captivate audiences with its blend of heartwarming moments and comedic flair.
Reprising their roles from the original film are a host of familiar faces, including Haanz Fa’avae-Jackson, Mikey Falesiu, and Onetoto Ikavuka. Under the direction of Anapela Polata’ivao and Vela Manusaute, and adapted by Leki Jackson-Bourke, the stage production is set to deliver the same warmth and energy that made the film a hit.
Joining the cast are Pasifika actors such as Sesilia Pusiaki, Diamond Langi, Saale Ilaua, and ‘Aisea Latu.
"The stage adaptation promises to be a must-see production, capturing the enchantment and emotion of the original film. Audiences can look forward to a visually stunning and passionate experience that will stay with them long after they leave the theatre." - Jonathan Bielski, CEO of Auckland Theatre Company
As Auckland Theatre Company prepares to bring "Red, White and Brass" from screen to stage, audiences can anticipate a joyous celebration of culture, friendship, and the universal love for the game of rugby.
