Mac, played by rising star comedian Sieni Leo'o Olo aka Bubbah aka King Ulavale has a side hustle dishing out relationship advice; despite never being in a relationship herself. Mac's advice is a blend of 'run it straight' and 'cheesy romantic'.
We caught up with the shows producer Abba-Rose Vaiaoga-Ioasa to find out a bit more about the show and how they found filming in a vertical format.
What gave you the idea for the concept or premise of the series?
"The idea grew from thinking about side hustles - what type of side hustle could someone come up with, when they have no start-up capital. This led to the idea of someone giving relationship advice from their garage/bedroom/office"

Where did you find the talent?
"Through a few different avenues but some of the talent like Sieni (Bubbah) we had worked with on our previous feature films and we brought them back for this project. Many of the other new talent on 'I Got You' we hadn't worked with before and it was through our work with Pacific Islands Screen Artists (PISA) and the various workshops we've run that we were able to meet these other actors."
How was it filming an IG/Tik Tok series in a vertical phone friendly format compared to what you normally shoot?
"It was challenging filming for a vertical format - because we have never done it before and so it took quite a while. It's not just a case of taking your usual shot list and coverage and applying it to a camera shooting vertically.
The vertical format is it's own genre and therefore has its own narrative techniques that you can use - such as split screens and running dialogue simultaneously - or having pop-up speech bubbles; so there are so many more avenues to work with, but also requires knowing how to film for those possibilities"
-
How many more episodes can we look forward to?
"We have x12 vertical episodes (made of between 3-4 parts) with two releases every week from February 14th on our @igotyouseries IG, TikTok, YouTube and FB pages and over on TAHI (RNZ)."
What advice would you give to young, aspiring creatives in terms of putting their ideas forward to get funded?
"Get good at writing. Writing scripts and writing proposals. Lots of practice required.
Understanding how funding works in the NZ screen sector is important - and then being prepared to meet the requirements and how to prepare proposals to communicate your idea effectively."
