Pasifika Artists Take To Auckland's 'Ka Mua Ka Muri'
To celebrate NZ Music Month, Auckland Council presents 'Ka Mua Ka Muri'! Ka Mua Ka Muri is a whakataukī/māori proverb that loosely means to walk backwards into the future. This is referencing knowing where you’re from to know where you’re going.
Now in its third year, Ka Mua Ka Muri is a web series of music performances and interviews with Auckland musicians and songwriters working mostly in the underground/ fringes of the Tāmaki Makaurau music community.
Shot in the second-floor basement of the Auckland Central City Library, providing an intimate environment and a juxtaposition to the typical live performance venues.
Four Pasifika artists have been highlighted as part of this year's line-up, and they'll take to the stage at Kāhui St David's Church for a free, live performance for everyone to enjoy!
Sam V
Winner of 2023 Pacific Music Awards - Best Pacific Soul/RnB artist, Sam V is perhaps the finest male RnB voice in Aotearoa. Sam is a ridiculously smooth operator whose runs and trills are his signature and world class, testimony to this are his forays into the US market. He’s also a staunch advocate for Tangata Moana talent who actively supports the tremendously deep talent pools coming from the various Tāmaki Pacific and Māori communities.
Juga
Singer/songwriter Juga another 2023 Stand Up, Stand Out winner and finalist across four categories. A gifted dancer, musician, story teller and a very strong vocalist with a sweet tone that she delivers with ease. Their ceiling of Juga is immense, and we expect to this young Tangata Moana songstress from the central west of Tāmaki to go from strength to strength in her musical journey.
En Passant
16-year-old Manurewa-based artist En Passant talks about how he blends jazz, classical and hip-hop to make music, and his love for his South Auckland community. En Passant is a 2023 Stand Up, Stand Out winner – a school-based performing arts competition to promote emerging talent in our schools.
Brandn Shiraz
Rapper, producer, artist Brandn Shiraz, formerly of the Tom Scott-led Young Gifted and Broke collective, and now a part of Risera collective. Brandn talks about the energy he gets from K Road and how he incorporates his Cook Island heritage into his music. Brandn also released a self-titled project in March and has been featured in Sniffers and Rolling Stone Australia.
