Indigenous groups hold healing ceremony in Paris

On November 29th the Indigenous Environmental Network organized a healing ceremony in front of the Bataclan Theater before thousands gathered to participate in a human chain action in the streets of Paris.

It was a beautiful ceremony featuring Indigenous youth speakers from North America, the Arctic, and the Pacific Islands. Our delegations always see it as a necessity to have prayer before any large action. We offered kind words, song, and calls for climate justice and peace.‪#‎DefendProtectRenew‬ ‪#‎IndigenousRising‬

Palolo Season

Palolo in Samoa, Balolo in Fiji - also Vula-I-Balolo-Lailai is the Fijian name of the month of October because this is when the Ocean starts to yield this precious delicacy once a week on the full moon!

Ta Palolo - the hunt for Palolo is one of the coolest things you can do in the Islands, catching the hard to snare caviar of the sea and returning with a good bounty carefully hidden from the sun is the ultimate prize!

Representing Aotearoa at the 2016 Pacific Arts Festival in Guam

Around 100 Māori and New Zealand-based Pasifika artists will represent Aotearoa alongside 26 other Pacific nations at the 12th Festival of Pacific Arts in Guam next May and June.

Considered the premier arts and culture event for the Pacific region, this is a government-to-government invitation, with the Māori Committee of the Arts Council of Creative New Zealand responsible for Aotearoa’s representation.

Invitations to the festival were extended to indigenous peoples of the Pacific, and Māori extended their invitation to New Zealand-based contemporary Pasifika artists to present a distinct Aotearoa voice.

“Once again we’re extremely pleased with the quality of artists who will be representing Aotearoa next year,” said Darrin Haimona, Head of the Aotearoa delegation for the 2016 festival and Chair of the Māori Committee.

“Together with our Pasifika brothers and sisters we will showcase the best of Māori and Pacific art from our country.”

Artists were invited to submit applications to be part of the Aotearoa delegation.…more

Fruit Carrier Race - Heiva i Tahiti 2015

Check out the highlights from the Fruit Carrier Race as part of the Heiva of the Tu’aro Ma’ohi, as part of the Heiva i Tahiti Festival this year!

The weekend of traditional Polynesian sports includes javelin throwing, stone lifting, coconut shelling, coconut tree climbing, and fruit carrier race.

Rubbed with monoi (coconut oil) and simply dressed in a pareu in the purest Tahitian tradition, competitors run a two-km race with two loads of fruits fixed on either end of a bamboo stick.

The race tests the athletes' speed, agility and endurance, and pays homage to the traditional transportation method still used to this day during their harvest time in June.
