‘Tautai Arts Trust navigates a new way forward’
A new era for Tautai Pacific Arts Trust has been ushered in, after an intense fono, seeking to address the ‘state of crisis’ that the organisation has been in over the last year.
“I’m happy in the outcome and the process we have managed to have, and that all the grievances were laid on the table” says arts veteran Sima Urale.
After a long period of controversial management, which saw formal and ad hoc complaints made from many Pacific artists, new board members have been voted in and a new director has been announced in the form of arts manager Courtney Meredith.
Tautai has been the only annually funded pacific arts trust in Aotearoa for over 30 years. One of only two arts agencies to be given ‘Totara level’ funding by CNZ, it’s mandate is to work to promote contemporary Pacific arts in Aotearoa.
In recent months allegations of bullying and mismanagement have been made against former trust manager Christina Jeffery, who has since resigned.…more

Meet Jordan Mailata, the 6-foot-8, 345-pound, former rugby league player from Sydney, Australia.
Today the young 21 year old Samoan has achieved the improbable and made the reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles roster! It's an incredible feat considering he's only played his first American football game four weeks ago and the list of talented, experienced Eagles players cut on Saturday.
Jordan has left a successful career in Australia to try and achieve the impossible – making an NFL roster, with no knowledge or previous experience of playing the game of American football.
This video from NFL Undiscovered follows his journey from an Australian Rugby League hopeful to Eagles Draft Pick.
Fresh Impressions on the Third ILGA OCEANIA regional conference in Samoa.
What to expect at a LGBTQI conference in Samoa?
How about having the opening ceremony and key note speaker from Deputy Prime minister Fiame Naomi Mataafa, four days of laying fa’afafine issues on the table and a kick ass Fa’afafine pageant that is one of the most popular events in Samoa? Yes! Everything that our Queer warriors before us worked so hard for, and a safe space for all LGBTQI in the Pacific.
“Having the conference here in Samoa will allow us to speak about the issues for LGBTI community in the region" says Tuisina Ymania Brown-Gabriel, the Executive director of the Pacific Human Rights Initiative and Global Ambassador of the Samoan Fa’afafine Association.
One of the many main problems she wants to highlight are how pastors use religion against the Fa’afafine community.
“Prosecute all other people that are sinners in the Bible. For example, the Bible specially talks abut no working on Sunday by our tourism industry will fail if they shut down on Sunday.…more

.
I am a Fijian Chinese born, raised in Fiji. I have 6 handsome brothers and 2 loving parents. I was raised in a small house with 14 people under one roof. Every day was dramatic. There was so much to do and so much fun and laughter. I was always surrounded by family and didn’t have my own room. It was truly the best days of my life, and I wouldn’t change a thing. I was brought up with 2 cultures; Fijian and Chinese, and was really blessed to come from a long line of family that cooks. We all love to cook. We bonded over the preparation of the food it always connected us. Everyone would pitch in and help some cousins would climb the trees and husk coconuts, other cousins would be peeling onions and preparing meats and aunties with their cups of teas.…more

Rarotongan/Samoan
FIFA Disciplinary Committee member / Entrepreneur / Lawyer
I was born in Auckland, but my parents moved to Rarotonga when I was 3 months old. My father is a Cook Islander and my mother is Samoan, so giving my older brother and I an island upbringing was something important to the both of them once I came along - hence the reason for moving back to Rarotonga, where my dad spent most of his childhood.
I was fortunate enough to have spent my childhood in Rarotonga as well, but was sent to school in Auckland once I reached high school (which is common for a lot of Cook Islanders). I was such a little island kid and adjusting to the lifestyle in NZ was a huge transition. But it was great! I got to experience the best of both worlds.…more
LAPI MARINER - A Healthy Lifestyle
Far beyond the physical benefits that a healthy lifestyle can bring, Lapi Mariner shares the importance of his health realities through his new lifestyle and current weight loss journey.
Popularly known as a prominent singer within the Pacific, the Father of 2 began his journey a year ago after an uncomfortable experience he had after one of his many performances.
“I was overseas in the US singing and noticed I was out of breath and had only just sung the first verse. So I got home and made a decision to make a lifestyle change.”
When returning to New Zealand, it was time to put it all to action. A year ago, Lapi got on board with former Heavyweight Professional Boxer, David Letele AKA The Brown Butter Bean, to help kick start his healthy lifestyle regime. This meant attending BBM WARD (Butter Bean Motivation) Boot Camp Classes 4-5 times a week, sticking to a healthy meal plan and drinking at least 4 litres of water a day.
Like many would experience, it wasn’t an easy start.…more

Tell us a little about yourself.
My Name is Matiah. I am an artist with Māori, Tongan, and Norweigan heritage. I specialize in tattooing, tamoko and tatau. I am the middle child of three...I was born and raised Manurewa.
When did you first realise tattooing was more than a hobbie?
I was raised constantly surrounded by all forms of creativity. I never saw art as a hobbie - I just unconsciously did it as a form of expression.....The transition into tattooing really just presented itself to me when I had just finished high school and had no clue as to what I was going to do with my life lol. I was definitely curious about tattooing though and had been for quite some time.…more
