Samoa Fashion Week 2016

Samoa exploded with the colours and patterns of Polynesia last night as a crew of 85 talented designers models and dancers brought their talents to the runway.

Showcased like jewels glittering across the Tanoa Tusitala pool, the designs saw a mix of emerging and established fashion houses showcase their creations.

While Fiji and PNG have lead the way with their fashion week events, this first ever week long festival of fashion now puts Samoa on the map as a design force to be reckoned with in the region.

Organised by the Samoa Arts Council, the runway show was a chance to put the spotlight on some of the new young design talent in Samoa. As the country now has many different outlets to sell local designs and a huge demand from locals as well as tourists for Pacific fashion, the time is ripe for these clothes to be displayed at this level.…more

Kava, Koko & Krack ups at the local Makeki!

Hot Kalo, ripe mangoes, and a dizzying array of island fashions make up all the colours of the rainbow at the big breezy produce makeki in Fugalei.

It's the centre point of local trade that does the thing every community market is supposed to do- hum with the sounds smells and visuals of local life, and offer up things you may never find anywhere else in the world.

The newly built makeki doesn't seem to be on the radar of many Aussie and Kiwi Samoans- whether that's a matter of just finding it, or demystifying what's in there that may look too freaky to try.
A treasure trove of every fruit and veg on the island, the makeki has also become the go to for hot umu at lunchtime to be eaten with fresh sea or steaming cups of koko esi.
Then there's the myriad array of handicrafts- the ie togas, the Siapo the carved woodwork in amongst the fans bags and ulas. These are often treasured finds for Polys overseas who can't source these natural fibre measina back home.…more

TAUMALOLO NAMED PLAYERS CHAMPION

Powerhouse lock forward Jason Taumalolo has been named Rugby League Players Association's Players' Champion for the first time in his career, ending teammate Johnathan Thurston's three-year grip on the trophy.

The 23-year-old finished the 2016 regular season with 4,002 running metres, 553 tackles, 71 tackle breaks and six tries in his best year of NRL since making his first-grade debut in 2010.

The Cowboys star was unable to attend the gala event at Sydney's Star Casino on Tuesday night, instead accepting the award via video link in Townsville.

Rugby league Immortal Andrew Johns fooled everyone in attendance when he announced that 'JT' had won, before explaining that it was in fact Taumalolo and not Thurston who had received the top gong.

"First of all I'd like to thank my peers for voting," Taumalolo said.

"Like 'Johnno' (Thurston) said before, this is right up there as the best or one of the biggest awards that you can win.…more

The Pacific Fusion Fashion Show went off in South Auckland and Coconet.TV caught the action.

Held at the Andrew-Simms Botany car dealership, the fashion design competition featured a mix of emerging and established designers showcasing street wear, evening wear, haute couture and ready to wear fashion.

Besides being a designer's competition and having several non-comp showings the event was a platform for models to face off strut their stuff for a place as the Face of Fusion 2017.
