Money Confidence for Pasifika wins at Diversity Awards

A course building money confidence with Auckland’s Pasifika workforce was the winner at last night’s Diversity Awards Impact Category.

The Diversity Awards recognise initiatives that promote equity, diversity and inclusion in workplaces around Aotearoa – and Project Ikuna’s Money Confidence does just that.  Delivered by the team at Upskills in partnership with Tātaki Auckland Unlimited, Money Confidence is a small course that delivers a life changing hit to participants. It’s financial literacy with Pacific values woven through the learning, so it’s relevant and meaningful for participants.

For Delegat employee and participant Ngāupoko Tapoki the learning takeaway was around saving. “Thank you to your team – I used to take a loan out every time I go back home.…more

A HipHop Step Class Changes Peoples Lives

We join the Xtreme HipHop instructors as they host a lively and special step class to welcome the creator of the fitness class Phil Weedan.

Phil also known as "The Creator" is world famous steo instructor. He stumbled onto his love of fitness by accident when he started his own fitness journey to transform his body and to combat his depression. Phil became a certified personal trainer in 2008. Then in 2013, Phil stepped out on faith and opened his own gym, Naturally Gifted Fitness Center located in Cleveland Heights. This is where the idea for Xtreme Hip Hop was born. Members of the gym wanted a step class, but he couldn’t keep a step instructor. Phil decided to embark on the journey of teaching the step class himself, but his first order of business was to find music that motivated him to move, and that’s exactly what he did.

Phil’s step class is now a worldwide hit.…more

Lui Vilisoni-Oliver Niu FM & 531 PI Program Director at the PMN offices in Manukau vs Lui back in the day on air at Niu FMs Brown Street studio.

Update to original story -

They were also the only Pasifika radio station recognised with this award.

We talked to Programme Director for Pacific Media Network (which includes Niu FM) Lui Vilisoni on why it's been important to play out local NZ Pasifika artists vs overseas artists on the station.

"The first reason is, who else will champion our artists if not us? I see and hear so much quality music from our NZ Pasefika artists, but they’re not picked up as much.…more

Director Tony Vainuku & Manti Te'o's 'Untold Story'

The internet has been buzzing over the last 24 hours after the 2nd Season of Netflix's UNTOLD series opened with the Manti Te'o story - 'Untold:  The Girlfriend Who Didn't Exist' co directed by Ryan Duffy and Tony Vainuku.

Key name right there - Tony Vainuku.  Not just because Tony is one of the Directors, but because if it wasn't for him, Manti may not have been open to sharing his story.

The Samoan NFL players incredible story is told in the Netflix two part episode (screening now - peep the trailer above).  It details the scandal around the Hawaiian born, former Notre Dame football standout who was infamously duped into believing his longtime girlfriend (who he never met in person) died just before his 2013 BCS National Championship game, before it was revealed that his dead girlfriend wasn't dead, his girlfriend or was even real.…more

Cover photo credit:  Via Radio Australia supplied by Ellia Green

Ellia Green came out as a transgender man in his opening address to the Bingham Cup (the 'World Cup' of gay and inclusive rugby, held biennially) International Summit on ending transphobia and homophobia in sport on August 16, 2022 in Ottawa.

The only other transgender or gender-diverse Olympic gold medallists are Caitlyn Jenner and Quinn, who goes by one name and was part of Canada's winning women's soccer team in Tokyo last year.

Seeing so few trans athletes at the elite level and so much negative commentary on social media, particularly since World Rugby's decision to bar transgender women from playing women's rugby, hastened Green's push to highlight the harm those things can cause some children.…more

Dawnraids Play Through The Lens Of the Female Characters

“I love that this is a story that isn’t centered around the raids, but around a family who went through the raids. There’s a clear distinction” Gaby Solomona ‘Fuarosa’ in the Dawn Raids play.

It’s no secret that we as Polynesian peoples are very Patriarchal. From how the feaus are done, to who get’s to speak at family functions, who stays home to look after the kids, who gets the titles. Even our storytelling is very male dominated.

In the past most stories, shows, films I have watched, including the one I, myself made, have all been very male dominated. So I was so excited to see that the 3 women who hold the story and family together in Dawn Raids are such integral parts of this show. Gaby Solomona (plays Fuarosa) speaks to the importance of the 3 women. Stating that while the show still has male voices, there are equally if not more important female voices that come through too.

Gaby shares “You’ve got the mum who is the glue of the family, the matriarch.…more
