Niue Takalo | Young, Gifted & Brown
Nofolisi Leslie Hala takes us behind the scenes in preparation for the biggest Niuean Takalo in New Zealand. This Takalo group is made up of Niuean men of all ages looking to pridefully showcase their culture and connect to their roots through the art of Takalo.
Takalo is a Niuean war dance. Performed by an individual warrior or group of warriors, the dance is a formal challenge. The dance was traditionally performed prior to engaging the enemy with traditional war clubs. Follow along as this village of proud Niueans weave their outfits, paint their faces, and shake off those pre-performance jitters. We then get to see a moving and monumental Takalo that this village put their hearts into.
"Young, Gifted & Brown" follows talented and passionate Nesians from different walks of life on a mission to leave their mark on the world. The series will profile different gifted young brown people from Directors to family lifeguards.
