Ipu Laga’aia steals the show at the Gala Concert in the Presence of Dame Kiri Te Kanawa

A gala concert at Auckland's Aotea Centre theatre, to celebrate its renaming after Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, held a surprise visit for the opera singer.

During the Wednesday night concert, video messages from some of Dame Kiri's former students were played – but one of them, Ipu Laga'aia, was secretly waiting to perform for Dame Kiri backstage.

Laga'aia emerged from the wings of the stage with a guitar in hand, to sing the spanish song Granada for Dame Kiri, who responded by performing a flamenco style dance.
