Tell us a bit about yourself
My name is Finau Lauaki, I'm 27 years old. I am of Tongan descent, Specifically from Vaini and Lapaha in tonga. I was born and raised in Auckland, specifically Onehunga (312) and at the age of 18 we moved to Mangere.
What was your journey into music like?
Growing up as an only child, I had no one to play with and my family wasn't well off and the only source of entertainment I had was an old school radio that belonged to my nana. I would spend hours tuning into various radio stations, Listening to music, and imagining myself singing along. That's where my love for singing began.
When I started high school, I stayed with family in Wellington. My cousins, who were musically talented, taught me different chords on the guitar and piano. When I returned to Auckland and started at Marcellin College, I would go to the music room and play these chords, sing melodies and write music, That's where my passion for songwriting truly blossomed.
What are your biggest inspirations both inside and outside of music?
My music inspirations change a lot. I get inspired by people who are willing to take risks and go against the grain. Everyday situations also inspire me when I’m writing music; if something evokes an emotion in me, I will most likely write about it.
How has your culture influenced your creative work?
As a Tongan, I take immense pride in my heritage. Growing up, I loved attending family functions where everyone danced and expressed themselves with joy, While writing this song, I envisioned people of all ages and ethnicities dancing and enjoying it just as much.
Tell us about your latest single
It's about confidently telling an ex-partner that you're never going back, fully aware of your value. The song has a danceable vibe, making it perfect for uplifting moments.
Produced by Chequered Patterns and written by me, this track started as a playful experiment. However, Chequered Patterns saw its potential and encouraged me to apply for funding. After some convincing, I went for it, and to my surprise, it got chosen!
What is something you want listeners to take from your music?
